Why did people beg for GPT-4 back
Inside the GPT-5 personality debate and OpenAI’s fix
When Chatgpt-5 launched, the internet lit up with comparisons to 4. The theme was clear.
- GPT-4 felt warmer, like a friendly conversation 😁
- GPT-5 feels more calculated and thorough, but slower and less chatty
OpenAI responded by bringing back 4o to paid users and adding clear mode controls so you can choose speed vs. depth.
And Sam Altman has also said GPT-5 will get a “warmer” personality that is friendlier than it is today, but not as over-chatty as 4o.
What changed: Quick Mode vs. Thinking Mode
GPT-5 now runs in two distinct modes:
- Quick Mode - Gives short, immediate answers for simple requests. Perfect if you just want a straight answer like “When is the next iphone release?” or “Summarize this in one sentence.” But many users complained it felt a little too abrupt, just like getting a text reply that’s just “K.”
- Thinking Mode – Slows down, gathers data from different places, and double-checks before replying. More accurate, but it can feel like you’re waiting on hold. People complained it was “overthinking” questions that didn’t need that much effort.
- Auto - Decides for you, flipping between speed and depth depending on the question. Left some folks wondering, “Why did it take 15 seconds to answer something so simple?”
When to use Quick Mode vs. Thinking Mode
In hospitality, you already juggle the same trade-off daily: answer fast when speed is the service, and think when the stakes are high.
Quick Mode in hospitality
Great for everyday questions that keep operations moving:
Things you might ask AI in Quick Mode:
- “How many bookings came in last night?”
- “What’s our current occupancy rate?”
- “Which upsell generated the most revenue yesterday?”
These don’t require much thought. The faster the answer, the better the experience.
Thinking Mode: Deep, strategic insights
Thinking Mode takes a little more time because it digs deeper. It pulls data from different systems, checks trends, and looks at the bigger picture before answering. It’s for decisions you don’t want to rush.
Things you might ask AI in Thinking Mode:
- “A guest says they were charged twice for their stay—can you confirm and identify where the error happened?”
- “Forecast next month’s occupancy based on current bookings and historical trends.”
- “Analyze guest feedback from the last month and summarize the top three complaints affecting reviews.”
- “Which guests are most likely to rebook in the next 6 months based on stay history and spending patterns?”
Thinking Mode is where you get insights you can act on—not just numbers, but the why behind them.
The Takeaway on what ChatGPT 5 Mode to use
Quick Mode gets you the answer fast. Thinking Mode makes sure it’s the right one. The skill is knowing which to use.
